full uninstall of MSSQL 2005 Ent SP1

Hi,

I am facing a serious problem with the unproper uninstall. I have installed MSSQL 2005 Enterprise and created an Active Directory at the server. I have removed the AD and wanted to uninstall SQL 2005.

I was not able to uninstall it fully. I have reinstalled it several times, just to tryying to remove the registry entries.

Is there a solution / tool or a document describing, how I can fully manually remove MS SQL 2005 from a server?

I have already installed SP1.

What isn't being uninstalled? Is the uninstall completing, but leaving behind files/registry keys? Or does the uninstall fail somewhere along the way?

after uninstall, I noticed on many places that registry entries have not been removed (several hundred places). I do not have a complete list (too many entries).

After uninstall, I try to install MSSQL 2005 Ent. (64-bit) once again. System Configuration Check goes fine (all are with status = Success). See the attached report at the end (att 1).

At the selection of components, I check all options (I can not select SQL Server failover cluster).

I select "Default instance". For service account, I choose "Use built-in System account" and select "Local system". By default, the following are selected to start and the end of the setup (SQL server, Analysis Service, Reporting Service). SQL Server agent is unchecked. Also, "Customize for each service account is unchecked".

For the Authentication Model, I select Mixed model (I have entered a password).

SQL Collation is set to "Slovenian dictionary order, case-sensitive, for use with 1250 (Central European).

Report Server is set to default configuration.

Overview of the installing components (see att 2). I click "Install" to start the installation.

I get an error message : An instance with the same name already installed on this computer. To proceed with SQL Server Setup, provide a unique instance name. (Error at SQL Server Database Service). See att 3 for more details from the log file.

I get also an error message with the Reporting services : "There was un unexpected failure during the setup wizard. You may review the setup logs ... Event ID: 50000. I have my content of the 2 installation CDs copied to a hard disk.

Full Text Indexing Limitations

Can anyone confirm for me that full text indexing will flake out once
reaching around 256 folders in the MSSQL\FTDATA directory? I've had a
larger number in this folder on a constant basis over the last year and have
had an occasional problem with the error of "
update sysobjects set ftcatid = 0 where ftcatid <> 0" along with other
errors when moving DBs to and from my staging servers.
I developed a script a couple of years ago that got me to the point where I
could delete and re-create these indexes when necessary and since they work
pretty regularly with my 500+, 1000+ folders in this directory I find it
hard to believe that 256 is the limit and was wondering what other
experiences there are out there.
Yes, I've tried probably every fix including manually reinstalling Full
Text, checking permissions, etc etc from MSDN articles out there so no need
to send them my way. I'm just asking for experiences here before calling
PSS.

|||My apologies Hilary, I see that the error that I pasted was actually some
code I was working with! My definition of "flake out" would be getting the
regular guest of "An unknown full text failure (80004005) occurred in
function EnumCatalogs on full-text catalog ''." on one staging server and
most recently and never before seen by me as of last week "The Microsoft
Search service cannot be administered under the present user account" on a
second staging server.
I'm running SQL 2000 on both and within the last year I've had to reload two
servers from the ground up (windows installs included) in order to resolve
the first error message. What I'm trying to figure out is, what additional
troubleshooting I can do to:
Determine what caused the problem versus searching the msdn/technet articles
for this message only to find what seems to be multiple guesses as to what I
can check that has caused the problem (registry, permissions, accounts used,
manual reinstall, etc) when none of these things (in my opinion) would ever
be changed. I've yet to find any of these resolving my problem, including
the manual reinstall of MSSearch. I've always found nothing changed or
missing from the MSDN/Technet articles and therefore only resolved, for a
number of months at a time, the problem by reinstalling.
Currently that is my planned track for this upcoming weekend (what an
exciting time I'll have). There needs to be a more specific error message
for these full text index issues in my opinion - esp. when you find articles
that list 4-5 solutions to the same error.

But if I look in the directory...I see nothing.
Yet...the system still lets me repopulate the index.
Is this normal? Should the index files be in this directory?
I searched the system for the .gthr files...and It shows them on the
D:\MSSQL\FTDATA directory.
This seems odd to me.

Full text indexes files missing?

I have a full text index...in the properties of the index the path
shows...
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\FTData
But if I look in the directory...I see nothing.
Yet...the system still lets me repopulate the index.
Is this normal? Should the index files be in this directory?
I searched the system for the .gthr files...and It shows them on the
D:\MSSQL\FTDATA directory.
This seems odd to me.They don't have to be in this directory, issue the following stored
procedure to find out where your files are
sp_help_fulltext_catalogs
Note the path column.

Full Restore Question

Did a point in time restore on Win2k Server EE MSSQL 2K EE sp3a
Database does a full back at 1am
Then from 4am on does a trans log backup
So had all file from 1am to about 5pm ( when the restore was attempted
)
I personally dont feel good about PITR but it was not my call.
Did the point in time recovery to 1206pm on that same day.
The restore ended up being right back at the time the restore was
started.
Any ideas?
I noticed doing the restore from Enterprise Manager when the checkbox
for point in time was clicked the list of backup files with checks by
them did not change.
Dont think they are supposed to.
How can I find out at what point in time the database actually did the
restore too?
EM has a but in the PITR dialog, as it natializes that datetime display and sends that string into
SQL Server, which in turn can be misinterpreted. Do the restore from QA and use a language neutral
way of expressing the datetime literals (STOPAT value), like 'YYYYMMDD hh:mm:ss'.

12pm, etc
I wanted to go back to the 12PM trans log
so I can check all from 1AM to that 12pm trans log and I should be

|||The dialog problem is datetime related. So if you don't do point in time restore, you don't specify
the date and time, and you will not see that problem. But why not just execute the RESTORE command
from Query Analyzer instead?

|||Well, since you don't do PITR, you will not get your most recent data. Also, as you have noticed,
there's a bug in EM, and such we will find from time to time. Learning writing and executing TSQL
makes us handle those situations quickly and solve the problem with minimal impact on your
production system. I think that Aaron has an article on EM vs. QA on www.aspfaq.com.
